South African Cross-Country Championships

On Saturday the 7th of November all of the best riders lined up to compete for the South African National Championship title at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch.

The very technical and demanding track meant that the riders were in for a tough race.

Keagan took part in the u/23 race which was hotly contested with many strong riders. The race was very fast from the start with a large group of riders staying together for the start loop. A lead group of 3 riders formed on the first lap including, Wessel Botha, Johan Van Zyl and Keagan Bontekoning. The 3 riders stayed together for another 3 laps but then on the 3rd lap Wessel Botha attacked up the main climb and Keagan could not follow falling a few seconds behind the leading 2 riders. As the race went on Keagan rode a good pace but was caught by Matthew Keyser and the two riders battled it out for the last step on the podium , Keagan started to struggled with cramps in the last 2 laps which caused him to lose a few positions where he finished the race in 7th.
