Prior to discovering the joys of mountain biking, Sydney was an avid runner. He was introduced to endurance sport when he decided to run (and successfully completed) the Comrades Marathon in 2011. In 2019, Sydney started mountain biking and entered a local race, the Makhulu 5 MTB.
Shortly thereafter, he joined Insect Science team and rode all the Limpopo races in the Sub Vet category, receiving Limpopo colours and finishing first overall in his category. In the same year he did his first stage races, the Cape Pioneer and the Tankwa Trek.
Racing alongside Gerhard Booysen in the Dryland 36ONE Challenge, they finished second overall in the 2-man team category.
“The Best part of cycling is the way you connect with nature; ride with your friends and meet new people with the same passion. I believe in doing everything to the best of your ability in a healthy, competitive way.
Riding for the Insect Science team is very big privilege and I like to challenge the pro team – not just on the bike, but also off the bike.”
